Each morning the “Breaking News” sections of the Internet editions of the Tribune and Sun-Times publish the violence reports in the Chicago area for the past 24 hours. The reports resemble war zone information on the dead and wounded. But these are not battle ready soldiers or enemy combatants. They are our fellow citizens in and around Chicago – and – many of them young. They have died before they had a chance to live; their dreams buried with them.
In spite of the data that tells us that the murder rate is declining, there is a feeling of hopelessness in too many neighborhoods all around us. So who/what is winning? Hope or Hopelessness? Mr. Dan McGrath, for 13 years the sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, has moved from the Tower on Michigan Avenue to a greystone building on West 79th street, just west of Halsted in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood of Chicago. He is beginning his fifth year as President of Leo High School, his alma mater, an all-male Catholic school serving an urban population from some of the most disadvantaged areas of the city.
