Leo Vs. Yorkville Christian – Basketball Commentary By Dan McGrath.

Leo 60, Yorkville Christian 57, Viking Shootout at St. Laurence, January 10

The game-winning, buzzer-beating three-pointer has become a weapon for the Leo Lions.

On Saturday it was senior Michael Lewis connecting on one from just inside the halfcourt line as time expired, lifting the Lions to a 60-57 victory over Yorkville Christian in the Viking Shootout at St. Laurence.

Freshman Elon Henderson did the honors in the season opener at Crane Medical Prep back in December, hitting from beyond the arc on the left wing and delivering a 46-43 Leo win.

Lewis’ three-point shooting has earned him a spot in Coach Jimalle Ridley’s rotation. Mere seconds remained when he took Asa Harris’ inbounds pass in the backcourt, dribbled twice into the left frontcourt and let fly. The ball hit nothing but net as the buzzer sounded, prompting Lewis’ disbelieving teammates to storm the court and carry him off.

Lewis is an honor student and the No.1 pitcher on the Leo baseball team, and as a member of the world-renowned Leo Choir, he made four national television appearances during the Choir’s magical run to a fourth-place finish on “America’s Got Talent” last year. So he’s no stranger to big-time excitement.

But this was excitement on another level.

Harris scored 21 points and Brian Kizer had 11 as the Lions improved to 12-4. They travel to Fenwick (7-8) for the resumption of Catholic League play on Tuesday evening, then play host to Providence Catholic (5-12) on Alumni Night at Leo on Friday, January 16.
