Lt. Colonel Daniel E. Furlong, class of 1955 – Rest in Peace

The Alumni Association was recently notified of the passing of Lt. Colonel Daniel E. Furlong (USAF Ret.) at the age of 83.

Dan was a graduate of the Leo Class of 1955,. While at Leo, Daniel participated in intramural sports and the camera club in his first and second years, and on the staff of school publications, including the school newspaper, the Oriole, in his third and forth years. He also participated in a variety of other activities. After graduation, Daniel joined the United States Air Force in 1957 and it became his calling in life. His military career spanned nearly 26 years and Daniel ultimately attained the rank of Lt. Colonel before retiring in 1983 as the commander of the 4950th Test Wing at Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio. Daniel served a tour of duty in Vietnam and was awarded a Bronze Star for his exemplary service. Daniel was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, and The Disabled veterans. Daniel was also included being a member of the Monroe Masonic 22 Ledge and he served as The President of the Stone Belt Shrine Club.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean Hough Furlong and three of his four daughters: Pamela (Jon) Backstrom of Clive, Iowa; Brenda Voisard of Marion, Ohio; and Edith (Ed) King of Bedford, Indiana, having been preceded in death, by his daughter Christine Furlong Chandler. He is survived by many other relatives, including thirteen grandchildren and 14 great grandcildren.
